Oerlikon Graziano Attends EVS30 Congress in Stuttgart
October 30, 2017
One of the most important European events dedicated to EV technologies, the EVS30 Congress highlighted the latest research projects, technological advances, market development strategies and innovative business models for electromobility concepts.
Oerlikon Graziano presented a technical speech on October 9th under the session Electric Power Trains, (Innovations and Developments) about its latest multispeed transmissions for electric drives, 2SED and 4SED.
The original assumption for electric vehicles and electric drivelines was to use a single-speed transmission, relying on the torque spread of the electric motor to provide adequate performance under all operating conditions. Though simple to execute, this arrangement cannot achieve the best vehicle efficiency because, for much of the time, the traction motor is operating at loads and speeds that do not yield optimum efficiency. The Oerlikon Graziano paper showed how an increase in transmission technology can reduce energy consumption and improve performance, and described two multi-speed concepts which can even maintain or indeed reduce the overall electric powertrain cost and weight.
